Wouldn't it be great to time-travel to the days of Charles Dickens? Kids ages 8-12 can do just that during the upcoming winter break, when the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation presents historian and author Dr. Annette Laing in "Could You Be A Victorian Kid?"
The program will be Tuesday, Feb. 21, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Newnan Carnegie Library.
In a day of fun role-play, kids learn first-hand what it was like to work in a factory, enter a British workhouse (just like Oliver Twist), and go to school in the Victorian era. They also visit the Great Exhibition of 1851, the first-ever world's fair, and sample Victorian foods.
With music, sound effects, and lots of humor, this journey in time is a blast. British-born Dr. Laing's 'non-boring history for kids' has been featured by the Associated Press. Her first visit to Newnan for last year's "Could You Be A World War II Kid?," also sponsored by the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation, was a huge hit. Laing is a former history professor, and the author of The Snipesville Chronicles, a series of time-travel novels featuring three Georgia kids.
Tickets are $25 each, and sales begin Feb. 1 at the Newnan Carnegie Library and Scott's Bookstore. Early purchase is recommended, since only 30 tickets are available.
For more information, visit newnancarnegielibraryfoundation.com , or call the Carnegie Monday through Friday at 770-683-1347.
The Newnan Carnegie Library is located at 1 LaGrange St. in downtown Newnan.
