Sunday package sales pass in Newnan, Senoia

By JOHN A. WINTERS john@newnan.com Voters overwhelmingly approved Sunday sales of beer and wine in Newnan and Senoia during Tuesday’s election. And with ordinances already passed by both city councils, individuals can start purchasing beer and wine at licensed businesses, including grocery stores, by the end of the month.
With all 11 precincts reporting, 70.32 percent of Newnan voters casting ballots were in favor of Sunday sales. In Senoia’s single precinct, it was 66.93 percent in favor. In Newnan, there were 2,355 votes cast. Of those, 1,656 were in favor and 699 (29.68 percent) opposed to Sunday sales. In Senoia, 514 votes were cast with 344 in favor and 170 (33.07 percent) opposed. In Newnan, the change goes into effect on Nov. 20, according to City Attorney Brad Sears. Businesses that already have a beer and wine license do not need to apply for a new Sunday sales license; the existing license will now include Sunday, Sears said. Senoia City Attorney Drew Whalen said he also believed that city’s ordinance goes into effect on Nov. 20. Licensed stores can now sell beer and wine on Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Unlike in previous years, there was little debate or controversy over allowing Sunday sales of beer and wine. Both Newnan and Senoia already allow Sunday-by-the-drink purchases.
